Following his successful kite experiments to capture lightning, Franklin, in studying the consistency of lightning with electricity generated by artificial friction, hypothesised from the analogy between the two that, as artificially generated electricity was absorbed by the tip, lightning could also be absorbed by the tip. This prompted him to devise kite experiments, the success of which in turn confirmed his conjecture. Franklin put together this lightning protection device: a thin iron rod several metres long was fixed to the top of a tall building and separated from the building by an insulator. A wire is then attached to the bottom end of the iron rod. This wire is then led underground. Franklin called this lightning protection device a lightning rod.
